This afternoon, unbeaten two-division world champion Jesse “El Niño” Rodriguez (20-0, 13 KOs), 24, from the United States, lived up to expectations by stopping Mexico’s Juan Francisco Estrada (44-4, 28 KOs) in the seventh round with a liver shot to claim the WBC and Ring Magazine super-flyweight titles. Here are the punch statistics for both fighters:
Boxer
Punches Landed/Thrown
Jabs Landed/Thrown
Power Punches Landed/Thrown
Estrada
95/368 (25.8%)
16/111 (14.4%)
79/257 (30.7%)
Rodriguez
156/371 (42%)
66/189 (34.9%)
90/182 (49.5%)
Despite similar overall punch output, Rodriguez landed significantly more punches effectively, particularly with his jabs, which controlled the pace of the fight. Estrada appeared somewhat disorganized in the ring, lacking Rodriguez’s technical skills, and perhaps not being at his best, given an 18-month layoff.
Post-fight, however, Estrada announced that he would immediately exercise his rematch clause and face Rodriguez again.
