Former two-time middleweight world champion Daniel “Golden Child” Jacobs (37-4, 30 KOs) recently stated to the media that current four-division world champion Canelo Álvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) is consistently avoiding the challenge of David Benavídez (29-0, 24 KOs), essentially out of fear.
Jacobs said, “I’d love to see that fight, but more importantly, the fans want to see it. So, Canelo should be facing David Benavídez right now. Benavídez is a big, strong, and difficult opponent, and in my opinion, Canelo is intentionally dodging him, choosing easier opponents so he can remain at the top of boxing until he retires.”
Álvarez’s next opponent could be Chris Eubank Jr. (33-3, 24 KOs). It’s been reported that an agreement is nearly in place, although Jermall Charlo and Edgar Berlanga are also potential opponents for Álvarez’s next bout.
Álvarez plans to face Terence Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) in the first half of 2025, which will be one of the biggest fights of the year in boxing. In comparison to Crawford’s style, Jermall Charlo might actually be the ideal tune-up opponent for Álvarez, given that Charlo is more slippery than the others.
