According to multiple foreign media reports, due to a calf injury sustained during training, Australian women’s football forward Sam Kerr will miss the first two group stage matches of this World Cup.
Reports indicate that Kerr, who was expected to be the face of this World Cup, unfortunately suffered an injury during the team’s training session on Wednesday. She was later diagnosed with a calf injury and will not be able to return in time for the first two group stage matches. However, if her recovery goes smoothly, she is expected to make a comeback in the final group stage match against Canada.
Following her injury, Kerr wrote on social media: “Unfortunately, I picked up a calf strain in training yesterday. I wanted to share this news with you all because there is nothing that can stop us from achieving our goals. Of course, I am desperate to play in the first game, but I am so happy to be here to witness the start of this journey.”
Kerr has been the captain of the Australian women’s national football team since 2019, and has played 120 matches for the national team, scoring 63 goals, making her the top scorer in team history. In the 2019 Women’s World Cup, Kerr scored 5 goals individually.
