Valencia, Spain, has recently been hit by unprecedented heavy rain, which has resulted in the tragic death of 95 people, with over 1,000 still trapped. The extent of the damage is still being assessed.
In light of this situation, the match between Valencia and Real Madrid, originally scheduled for this weekend at Mestalla Stadium, is highly likely to be postponed. Valencia has officially requested a change in the match date, and La Liga has submitted an application to the Spanish Football Federation to postpone the game, with Real Madrid also agreeing to the postponement.
However, the challenge now is to determine when the rescheduled match can take place, given the tight schedule.
While this is a relatively minor issue compared to the immense loss caused by the natural disaster, the postponement does present significant challenges. According to Spanish newspaper Marca, finding a suitable date for the rescheduled match in the short term is extremely difficult. There was initially a gap between December 17 and 19, but this period is not feasible due to Real Madrid’s participation in the Club World Cup in Qatar.
Therefore, other possible dates must be explored. If both teams progress in their respective competitions, the earliest available slots would be February 11-13 or February 18-20, 2025, assuming Real Madrid does not enter the Champions League play-offs.
If Real Madrid must participate in the Champions League play-offs, the match could be postponed until after the 33rd round, on April 26 or 27, provided neither team reaches the Copa del Rey final on April 26. If one of the teams does reach the final, the match might even be delayed until the end of the season, potentially taking place during the midweek of May 20-22, after the 37th round.
