After defeating Italy, the Swiss national team advanced to the quarter-finals of the Euros, where they will face England. However, according to Swiss media outlet Blick, UEFA has allocated only 7,000 tickets for Swiss fans for this match.
The CEO of the Swiss National Team Fan Club, Zürih, revealed that in the last 24 hours, he received hundreds of messages, with his phone ringing almost non-stop. Over ten thousand fans expressed their need for tickets to watch Switzerland play live in just one day. Nevertheless, UEFA has made available only 7,000 tickets, with a mere 1,100 being allocated to the fan club.
The high demand can be attributed to the team’s strong performance and UEFA’s ticketing policy: each nation is limited to a maximum of 7,000 tickets for any match, regardless of venue. Up to 70% of the tickets were sold before the opponents were determined, mostly to local and neutral fans, which in this case means many German fans. This has resulted in a situation where tickets are scarce for fans of teams like Switzerland who have progressed further.
The policy also creates an issue when fans speculate about their team playing against another nation but end up being eliminated earlier (as was the case with Italy). Since UEFA prohibits ticket resales and refunds, these fans are left with no choice but to gift or abandon their tickets, potentially affecting the atmosphere of the upcoming matches.
Swiss fans currently have no option but to wait for the fan association’s efforts to secure unused tickets.
