Recently, former Arsenal legend Arsène Wenger granted an exclusive interview to German publication SPORTBUZZER, sharing his insights on the upcoming 2024 European Championship.
[Reporter] What are your expectations for the group draw?
[Wenger] I think the group with France, the Netherlands, and Austria will be fascinating. Of course, the group featuring Spain, Italy, Croatia, and Albania will also be closely watched.
[Reporter] What’s your take on Germany’s group?
With home advantage, I’m eagerly anticipating the opening match between Germany and Scotland; the atmosphere in the stadium will be incredible.
[Reporter] How do you see Germany performing under Nagelsmann?
[Wenger] It’s very difficult to predict. There are still six months left, and a lot can change. We can’t base our judgment solely on Germany’s recent performances. Perhaps it’s advantageous that they haven’t been outstanding; this way, the team can approach the tournament without too much pressure, and the DFB can prepare some surprises. In my view, Germany isn’t the only favorite for the title, but playing at home will give them an edge. Winning their first game is crucial; it will build confidence and reignite the nation’s passion.
[Reporter] Is Nagelsmann the right fit for this German team?
[Wenger] Playing at home, he’ll have immense pressure. But he’s someone who excels at motivating players and igniting their fighting spirit.
[Reporter] Which team do you think will win the Euro Cup?
[Wenger] The World Cup runners-up, France, are certainly among the favorites; they played with ease in the qualifiers. The team seems solid and reliable. England is another strong contender; they’ve matured, and Southgate’s players are seasoned competitors. Lastly, I wouldn’t rule out Portugal, with their wealth of experience and talented squad.
