Uruguay will face Colombia in the Copa America semifinals. Uruguay’s coach Bielsa is concerned about Colombia’s attacking talent but also emphasizes that Uruguay will take the initiative and control the game.
The 15-time Copa America champions Uruguay defeated the 9-time champions Brazil in a penalty shootout in the quarterfinals. They now face a stern test against an in-form Colombia in the semifinals. Colombia easily beat Panama 5-0 in the quarterfinals, extending their unbeaten streak in all competitions to 27 games. Colombia’s core player James Rodriguez has regained his brilliance, and under his drive, Colombia’s total goal count in this Copa America has risen to 11.
Bielsa praised Colombia’s attacking talent and stated that his team needs to defend well to reach the Copa America final for the first time since 2011. Bielsa said, “We must start from defense, look for opportunities to attack and score goals. You always ask me if I have a Plan B? In fact, there isn’t one; we can only do our best. Colombia’s strength is in attack, so we must focus on defense first.”
This match will be the third time Uruguay and Colombia meet in the Copa America semifinals, and Bielsa feels some concern about the threat of the opponent. Bielsa said, “Colombia is a formidable opponent; they’ve been on a good run recently, and there’s a deep understanding between the players and the coach. The match against Brazil was the toughest competition, and the same goes for the match against Colombia because they are a team with strong players, a mature tactical system, and excellent teamwork, with a consistent playing style.”
