On July 15th, in a recent interview, F1’s double world champion, Fernando Alonso, discussed the differences between current drivers and those from the past. He believes that although young drivers are very talented, they are more reserved and lack individuality.
Alonso said, “There is definitely a difference between generations. I think older drivers had different personalities, attitudes towards racing, and life compared to today’s drivers. The older generation of drivers were tough competitors. Today’s drivers, I would say, are incredibly talented. Perhaps it’s because they have comprehensive preparation, professional training academies, simulator training, advanced technology, and vast amounts of data to help them improve and learn quickly. By the time they enter F1, they are better prepared than ever. However, outside the track or when the helmet comes off, perhaps there is some similarity in how they handle things, being more reserved. They have professional teams managing their business affairs, media relations, and physical training. They may have lost some of their own individuality.
Born in 1981, the now 43-year-old Alonso can be considered a legendary driver still active in the paddock.
