Chiellini shared his thoughts on the Italian national team and Juventus in an interview with Sky Sports. Recalling highlights of his career, Chiellini mentioned two memorable moments: “First, winning the Euros and lifting the trophy at Wembley. But if I had to choose a picture to represent me, it would be me with a headband, showing off to Real Madrid players at the end of the match.”
Talking about Italy under Spalletti, Chiellini said, “It’s a young and dynamic team going through a transition, evident from the average age of players and squad turnover. Spalletti is in his prime as a coach, with a unique character and deep passion for the national team. I’m curious and excited to see what he can achieve with them, and I’ll support them wholeheartedly.”
When analyzing the Euro favorites, Chiellini stated, “We’re not one of them; France, Portugal, and England are considered stronger contenders. Spain has a glorious history, and Germany has home advantage. These are the main title favorites. Italy belongs to the second tier, but that’s okay. I know no team would want to face us in the knockout stages.”
Commenting on emerging talents, Chiellini discouraged direct comparisons: “Comparing newcomers to legends isn’t fair. I was fortunate to play alongside Cannavaro, but I never saw myself as his successor. Now, we have players like Bastoni, Barella growing, and Donnarumma, a world-class goalkeeper, who’s a precious asset for Italy.”
Referring to Bonucci’s retirement, Chiellini reflected, “He’s a warrior who fought until the end. Our retirements mark the end of an era. It was an honor to fight alongside him for so many years. A reunion of the ‘BBC’ (Bonucci, Barzagli, Chiellini)? It’s a beautiful dream, but difficult to realize. As for my future, after the summer, I’ll return to Turin, with no specific plans yet. I’ve started a new life in Los Angeles, enjoying work and learning about management and business.”
On Conte taking over Napoli, Chiellini expressed optimism: “I believe he’ll do great; his combination with Napoli is fascinating and full of potential.”
Mentioning Motta coaching Juventus, Chiellini said, “Motta showed coaching qualities as a player and has had an extraordinary year. He has all the ingredients for success. I look forward to him succeeding at Juventus and am confident in his abilities.”
Finally, Chiellini assessed Juventus’ season: “The team gave its all, and even Guardiola wouldn’t have done much better in charge.”
