On July 24, the latest issue of the newspaper Dongfang Sports Daily published an article by Ma Dekang titled “Nobody Mentions Naturalization Anymore.” The article questions the significance of naturalization, whether through bloodline or non-bloodline ties. Even if these players can continue playing in the Chinese Super League (CSL), what is the level of the league? The outcome of naturalization appears to be “homogenization”!
The article states that today, certain individuals who are solely focused on results and achievements still pin their hopes for World Cup qualification on so-called “naturalized players,” thus engaging in all sorts of persuasion. They don’t have to spend any money themselves; all they need to do is talk and type on the internet. Moreover, they cite various examples, particularly Indonesia’s recent success with naturalizing numerous players, which has had immediate effects. Therefore, they insist that Chinese football must learn from this example.
In addition, the journalist analyzes that indeed, Indonesia’s naturalization efforts have yielded good results. These naturalized players do not need to live in Indonesia; they can continue living and playing in the Netherlands without occupying non-EU player spots at their clubs. They only need their club’s approval to return when representing Indonesia’s national teams at various levels.
Finally, the article concludes that “naturalization,” especially bloodline naturalization, has little significance at this stage. It is time to stop looking for shortcuts and focus on diligently nurturing young homegrown talents instead.
