Today, UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin gave an interview to Sky Sports, during which he discussed the reform of the Champions League format.
In the interview, Čeferin stated: “Players now have significant complaints about the intense scheduling, they believe there are too many matches. Clubs feel the same way, they think that while schedules are increasing, restrictions on buying players remain, making it impossible for teams to bear the high salaries.”
“However, looking at it from another perspective, these matches actually present an opportunity for smaller clubs. The surge in prize money gives smaller clubs a chance to develop. Additionally, filling up the schedule will also prevent these clubs from participating in other competitions, our schedule is already packed.”
When discussing the impact of Saudi Arabian clubs on European football, Čeferin said: “We welcome the huge investments from Saudi Arabian clubs, but this will not have a significant impact on European football. Most of their investment will be returned to the clubs, and for us, getting more sponsorships and welcoming larger broadcasters is a good thing.”
Regarding the hosting locations of the Champions League, Čeferin stated: “We are no longer planning to move Champions League matches overseas, nor do we intend to change the system of the Champions League. The Champions League should be held in Europe, and fans should watch the games in Europe.”
