June 24th – According to the chief reporter for sports media outlet The Athletic (TA), DO, England manager Gareth Southgate has decided to start Conor Gallagher in place of Trent Alexander-Arnold for the final group stage match against Slovenia.
England currently sits atop Group C with four points from a win and a loss in their first two matches. Southgate’s aim is to secure a victory in the last group game to progress as group winners and avoid meeting Germany or Spain in the knockout stages.
Alexander-Arnold usually plays as a right-back for Liverpool but has started both previous games in a midfield role alongside Declan Rice. His performances have been unremarkable, with Gallagher replacing him in both matches. Gallagher has since gone on to create the most chances and key passes for the England team when on the pitch.
Southgate has made changes to his starting eleven in the third match of each of his previous three major tournaments and has also tinkered with the lineup in the first knockout round fixture each time.
