On July 5th local time, the 2024 Wimbledon Championships concluded its fifth day of main draw action, with several matches postponed due to rain. The only Chinese singles player in action, China’s Golden Flower Zhu Lin, fell in a tight three-set battle against qualifier and New Zealand’s Chinese-American player Sunny Lu, failing to advance to the round of 16.
Zhu Lin
This was the first encounter between Zhu and Lu. In the opening stages, Zhu applied pressure, creating breakpoints in Lu’s service games but failed to convert them. Instead, it was Lu who secured an early break in the fifth game. Despite Zhu immediately breaking back, the match went to a first-set tiebreak, where Lu proved more composed, winning 7-4. In the second set, Zhu broke first to take the lead, but her own serve inconsistencies prevented her from pulling away. Another tiebreak ensued, and after holding two match points at 6-4, Zhu lost four consecutive points, ending her campaign.
Sunny Lu
Raducanu
In a post-match interview, Lu expressed in Mandarin, “I think she (Zhu) is really a strong opponent. I felt today was a new opportunity, so I didn’t have any pressure. I tried my best and gave it my all.” Lu will now face home favorite Raducanu for a spot in the quarterfinals. Raducanu had earlier defeated ninth seed Sakkari in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Gauff
Pauline Parmentier
In the women’s draw, second seed Gauff comfortably defeated a qualifier; seventh seed Paolini overcame Andreescu; 19th seed E. Navarro rallied to beat Schneider; they all advanced to the round of 16. Fourteenth seed Kasatkina and 28th seed Yastremska lost to Badosa and Vekic, respectively.
Carlos Alcaraz
Dimitrov
In the men’s singles, top seed Sinner swept Kecmanovic in straight sets; third seed Carlos Alcaraz fought back from two sets down to defeat Tiafoe; tenth seed Dimitrov eased past Monfils; 14th seed Paul defeated Bublik, all booking their places in the men’s singles round of 16.
