On June 12, Beijing time, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek announced her withdrawal from the upcoming WTA500 Berlin grass tournament, which is set to start next week.
In a statement, she said, “After nine intense weeks of competition, both my body and mind are exhausted. Unfortunately, I need to withdraw from Berlin to rest and recover.”
Swiatek dominated the clay season with a 19-match winning streak, capturing titles in Madrid, Rome, and Roland Garros, defending her French Open crown.
According to her current schedule, her next appearance will be at Wimbledon, starting on July 1, where she reached the quarterfinals last year.
Despite the top seed’s absence, the Berlin field remains strong with all other nine top-ten players in attendance, as well as former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka and wildcard recipient Angelique Kerber.
