According to reports by the British media The Times, if Manchester City’s 115 alleged violations are ultimately proven, several Premier League clubs reserve the right to sue and seek compensation from Manchester City, with the amount potentially reaching hundreds of millions of pounds.
Although the accusations against Manchester City have not yet been resolved, due to a six-year statute of limitations, many Premier League clubs have taken action under the guidance of lawyers before the deadline on Tuesday. After all, once the results of the hearing on Manchester City’s violations are announced, any claims for compensation may be deemed untimely.
Some Premier League teams argue that they have suffered financial losses due to Manchester City’s violations, such as missing out on Premier League titles or failing to qualify for European competitions during the period of the violations. The amount of compensation sought could reach hundreds of millions of pounds. While Premier League rules do not allow clubs to directly sue Manchester City in court, they can file an arbitration lawsuit through Rule X.
The investigation into Manchester City by the Premier League began in December 2018 and charges were announced in February 2023. However, the alleged violations by Manchester City do not include the salary details of Mancini from 2009-2013 or the detailed salaries of Manchester City players in the 2010-11 and 2015-16 seasons.
Manchester City has consistently denied the allegations and stated that they have “irrefutable” evidence to clear their name. The resolution of the charges against Manchester City is likely to be completed before the end of this season, but there is also a possibility of further delays. There are precedents for compensation; when Everton was penalized points, their competitors were given the right to seek arbitration for compensation.
