November 22, this season’s Premier League VAR system has faced significant criticism, with several club managers or executives voicing their concerns. Today, Southampton manager Russell Martin joined the chorus.
In the 9th round of the Premier League, Southampton lost 0-2 away to Wolverhampton Wanderers. During the match, Manning’s goal in the 14th minute was disallowed, while Wolves player Cuña’s goal, which helped expand their lead, was highly controversial.
In a meeting with Premier League referee chief Howard Webb, Martin stated, “If we want to improve VAR and make it better, we need to be truly honest and take full responsibility. I still have objections to our goal being disallowed and the controversial goal we conceded. The review they conducted concluded that it was the correct decision, which is very frustrating.”
“I believe the referee should spend more time analyzing before making a decision, but now, even after VAR review, if the decision is still wrong, it is even more frustrating. However, referees are human, and they can make mistakes, but such decisions erode our trust in them.”
