Southgate: Coaching England Was My Honor, It's Time to Turn the Page

Original text of Southgate’s farewell letter:

As a proud Englishman, representing and coaching the England team has been the honor of my life. It means everything to me, and I have given everything to it.

But now is the time for change, and it’s time to turn the page. Sunday’s final against Spain in Berlin was my last match as England’s head coach.

I joined the FA in 2011 with a determination to improve English football. During that time, including my eight years as head coach of the England men’s team, I have had the support of some remarkable people, and I thank them from the bottom of my heart.

I could not have asked for a better person than Steve Holland by my side. He is one of the most talented coaches of his generation and is exceptional.

I have had the privilege of leading many players over 102 matches, each of whom has been proud to wear the Three Lions shirt and has brought credit to the country in many ways.

Our team at this summer’s UEFA European Championship in Germany was full of exciting young talent who can win the trophy we dream of. I am proud of them, and I hope we can support the players and teams at St. George’s Park and the FA, which works tirelessly every day to improve English football, and understand the power of football to drive positive change.

I want to extend a special thanks to the backroom staff who have provided unwavering support to the players and me over the past eight years. Their hard work and dedication inspire me every day, and I am very grateful to them—the outstanding team behind the scenes.

We have the best fans in the world, and their support means everything to me. I am an England fan, and I always will be.

I look forward to watching and celebrating as the players continue to create more special memories and do our best to inspire and support the team.

Thank you, England—thank you for everything.
